Thanks for visiting my page! Here is a written tutorial with photos on my free crochet pattern the Blocked Granny Square!
First, with any project you’ll need a crochet hook and yarn. Any yarn or hook will do for learning how to make this square.
There are several ways to start this motif. You can use the Magic Ring/Circle/Loop, I have a tutorial here! The Chain 4 method, I have a tutorial here! Or the Slip Stitch Method, I have a tutorial here!
I will be using the Chain 4 Method for my tutorial
For this pattern you'll need to know how to make Chains (CH), I have a tutorial here! How to make a Slip Stitch (SL ST), I have a tutorial here! How to make the Single Crochet Stitch (SC), tutorial here! And how to make the Double Crochet Stitch (DC), I have a tutorial here!

Row 1: Make 4 chains
Make 2 DC into the 4th CH from your hook
The 3 CHs from the beginning will count as 1 DC
*Make 2 CHs
Make 3 DC into same center CH space
Repeat the steps above from * until you reach the end of your row, SL ST into the 1st CHs made in your row
You should have 4 sides of 3 DC and 4 corners of CH 2s
Fasten off your color, tutorial here!
Row 2: Attach your new color to a corner space, make 4 CHs
Make 1 SC into the same corner space
*Mak3 3 CHs to skip over the previous 3 DC made in your last row
Make 1 SC into next corner space
Make 3 CHs for your next corner
Make 1 SC into same corner space
Repeat the steps above from * until you reach the end of your row
SL ST into the 1st CHs made in your row
Fasten off your color, tutorial here!
Row 3: Attach your new color to a corner space, make 3 CHs
Make 2 DC into same corner space
Make 2 CHs
Make 3 DC into the same corner space
*Make 3 DC into next side space from previous CHs
Into the next corner work: 3 DC + CH 2 + 3 DC
Repeat the steps above from * until you reach the end of your row
SL ST into the 1st CHs made in your row
Fasten off your color, tutorial here!
Row4: Attach your new color to a corner space, make 4 CHs
Make 1 SC into same corner space
*Make 3 CHs
Skip over previous 3 DC, make 1 SC between the previous DC groups
Repeat these 2 steps above from * until you reach the next corner space
Into next corner space make: 1 SC + CH 3 + 1 SC
Repeat these steps above from * around until you reach the 1st CHs you made in this row
SL ST into the 1st Chs made in this row to complete
Alternate between rows 3 & 4 for however long you want your project
This is what the Blocked Granny Square should look like when completed!
