Here is the free pattern/tutorial:
Materials:
Yarn – Any yarn will work – I used Medium/DK weight for my example square
Crochet hook – Any hook will work – I used a I hook for my example square – 5.5 MM
Scissors
Stitch Markers
Notes:
I Fasten Off each row to change colors:

To keep your squares straight, flip your work every row
Crochet Stitches Needed:
Chain – CH
Stitch – ST
Skip – SK
Slip Stitch (SL ST):

Double Crochet Stitch (DC):

Double Crochet V Stitch (DC V):

Pattern:
Row 1: CH 5, 1 DC into 5th CH from your hook (farthest CH), *CH 3, DC V into same CH, repeat from * 2 more times, SL ST into the 1st CHs of this row
You’ll have 4 DC V for each side and 4 CH 3 space for each corner
Row 2: (Start at corner) *CH 4, 1 DC into corner space, *CH 3, DC V into same corner space, DC V into next previous side DC V, 1 DC V into next corner space, repeat from * around, SL ST into the 1st CHs of this row
Row 3: (Start at corner) *CH 4, 1 DC into corner space, *CH 3, DC V into same corner space, 1 DC V into each of the next previous side DC V’s until you reach the next corner, 1 DC V into next corner space, repeat from * around, SL ST into the 1st CHs of this row
Repeat row 3 for any future rows
