Photo Tutorial – Crochet Pattern: Open Concept Granny Square!

Thanks for visiting my page! Here is a written tutorial with photos on how to make my Open Concept Granny Square!

First, with any project you'll need a crochet hook and yarn. Any yarn or hook will do for learning this stitch

To start, We are going to make a circle that will turn into a square

There are several ways you can start a circle, I have a playlist here!

This is the tutorial here, that I'm using to start my circle/square

Row 1: Make 4 CHs, then SL ST into the 4th CH from your hook to make a space/circle to work into

Make 3 CHs (these count as 1 DC)

Make 2 DC into that center/circle space

*Corner: Make 2 CHs

Side: Make 3 DC into that center space

Repeat the steps above from * until you have 4 corners and 4 sides

Then SL ST into the 1st CHs made in this row to complete

Row 2: Bring in new color, attach that yarn to the middle DC of any previous 3 made

Make 3 CHs (these count as 1 DC)

Make 4 DC into that same ST

*SL ST into the next ST

We've reached the corner space, make 1 SC into that space

Make 3 CHs

Make 1 SC into that same corner

Skip 1 ST, make 5 DC into the next ST

Repeat the steps above from * until you reach the 1st CHs you made in this row

SL ST into those 1st CHs to complete this row

Row 3: Bring in new color, attach that yarn to the middle DC of any previous 5 made

Make 4 CHs (these count as 1 DC + CH 1)

Make 1 DC into same ST (this is a DC V with those CHs)

*Make 4 CHs

Skip to previous 3 CHs, Make 1 SC into those CHs

Picot ST: Make 3 CHs, SL ST into that SC just made to complete the Picot ST

Make 4 CHs

Corner: Skip to middle DC of next previous 5 DC

make 1 DC V into that ST

Make 3 CHs

Make 1 DC V into that same ST

Repeat the steps above from * until you reach the 1st CHs you made in this row

SL ST into those 1st CHs to complete this row

Row 4: Bring in new color, attach that yarn to the CH 4 on the right of any Picot ST

Make 1 CH

*Make 1 SC, 1 HDC, 2 DC, 1 HDC, 1 SC all into that same space

SL ST into the space behind the next Picot ST

Make 1 SC, 1 HDC, 2 DC, 1 HDC, 1 SC all into that next previous CH 4 space

Corner: Make 1 DC into corner space

Make 3 CHs

Make 1 DC into same corner space

Repeat the steps above from * until you reach the 1st CH you made in this row

SL ST into those 1st CHs to complete this row

Row 5: Row 4: Bring in new color, attach that yarn to either of the middle DCs of the previous Shell

Make 4 CHs (these count as 1 DC + CH 1)

Make 1 DC into that same ST (this makes a DC V)

1 TR, CH 1, 1 TR into SL ST behind previous Picot ST

Skip to one of the next middle DCs out of the previous Shell

Make 1 DC V into that ST (DC, CH 1, DC)

Corner: Make 1 DC V into the next corner space (DC, CH 1, DC)

Make 3 CHs

Make 1 DC V into that same corner space (DC, CH 1, DC)

Skip to one of the next middle DCs out of the previous Shell

Make 1 DC V into that ST (DC, CH 1, DC)

Repeat the steps above from * until you reach the 1st CHs you made in this row

SL ST into those 1st CHs to complete this row
