Thanks for visiting my page! Here is a written tutorial with photos on how to make my Bright Side Afghan!

This blanket is make from spiked crochet squares, joined to make a blanket! Enjoy!

First, with any project you'll need a crochet hook and yarn. Any yarn or hook will do for learning this blanket

For this tutorial you'll need to know how to make Chains (CH), tutorial here! How to make the Slip Stitch (SL ST), tutorial here! How to make the Double Crochet Stitch (DC), tutorial here! And how to make the Double Crochet Spike Stitch (DC SP), tutorial here!

There are several ways to start these squares. You can use the Magic Ring/Circle/Loop, I have a tutorial here! The Chain 4 method, I have a tutorial here! Or the Slip Stitch Method, I have a tutorial here!

I have a playlist with more circle tutorials here!

This blanket is made up of my Spiked Granny Square joined together. So let's get into how to make these squares:

We are looking at the front of our square

Row 1:

I will be using the Chain 4 Method for my tutorial

So make 4 CHs

If you're using another circle, make 3 CHs

Make 2 DC into the 4th CH from your hook

If you're using another circle, make 2 DC into that center/circle

*Make 2 CHs

Make 3 DC into that center space/circle

Repeat the steps above from * around

You'll have 4 sides of 3 DC

and 4 corners of 2 CHs

SL ST into the 1st CHs made in this row to complete

Fasten off this row, tutorial here!

Row 2:

Flip your square over to the backside

Attach your new yarn to any previous corner space/CH 2 space

Make 3 CHs

I would suggest doing this even if you are continuing with the same color. Flipping the square keeps your square straight. And fastening off and attaching the color for the new row keeps your square from having visible seams.

Make 2 DC into that same corner space

*Make 3 CHs

Make 3 DC into that same corner space

CH 1, skip to the next corner space, make 3 DC into that corner space

Repeat the steps above from * around

SL ST into the 1st CHs made in this row

Fasten off this row, tutorial here!

Row 3:

Flip your square over to the frontside

I would suggest doing this even if you are continuing with the same color. Flipping the square keeps your square straight. And fastening off and attaching the color for the new row keeps your square from having visible seams.

Attach your new yarn to any previous corner space/CH 3 space

Make 3 CHs

Make 1 DC into that same corner space

Make 3 CHs

Make 2 DC into that same corner space

*Make 1 CH, to skip the next 3 STs

Make 1 DC into that next CH 1 space

Make 1 DC SP into the middle DC below

Then make 1 regular DC into that same space as the 1st made out of the 3

Make 1 CH, to skip the next 3 STs

Make 2 DC into that next corner space

Make 3 CHs

Make 2 DC into that same corner space

Repeat the steps above from * around

Then SL ST into the 1st CHs in this row to complete

Fasten off this row, tutorial here!

You would now repeat Row 3 for how big you want your squares

As your square gets bigger you will have more spaces to work into on the sides

But the pattern will stay the same, CH 1 to skip 3 STs, then (1DC, 1 DC SP, 1 DC) into any side space

The corners stay the same, (2 DC, CH 3, 2 DC)

Then for your blanket:

  • I made 5 rows for each square

  • I made a total of 49 squares (7x7)

  • I joined my squares using the Join As You Go Method:

  • Video tutorial here, step by step photo tutorial here!

  • You can use any join you want for your blanket, I have a playlist featuring more here!

This is what my Bright Side Afghan should look like when completed!
